Hiking and Kayaking Alaska

Updated: Sep 12, 2021

Filled with magnificent lakes, mountains and views, Alaska is a place you surely will never forget.

After a year of being forced to stay in my house because of Covid-19, I was itching to explore the world again. Alaska ticked all the boxes, so on June 27th I journeyed to Alaska. I would be experiencing Alaska through a trip created by a summer camp organization called Overland Summers. On the plane ride there I was already amazed at the beautiful mountains that surrounded my vision. On Day 1, we did a pretty easy day hike to a peak called Mount Baldy. It was fairly clouded and mystical.

On day 2, we began backpacking to Eagle Lake. The terrain started off in a valley that was green and beautiful. It reminded me a lot of South Fork of Big Pine. I felt great from my pre trip preparation, the 35 pounds in my backpack were not slowing me down. After hours of hiking we made it to the beginning of Eagle Lake. The only problem, a big boulder field stood in our way. After another hour of trekking and determination we were rewarded with a magnificent view of Eagle Lake.

The following day we hiked to Symphony Lake and then explored even farther and found some more glacial lakes.

Day 4 we hiked out, and then went to a new campsite. Where for the next couple of days we had some fun adventures including visiting a reindeer farm.

A couple of days later, we started backpacking Johnson Pass. Just like our first backpacking trip the terrain was green and luscious. 6 hours of hiking later we arrived at our campsite, it was pouring rain relentlessly. In the morning we packed up our stuff and hiked up farther to another campsite with a beautiful view of a lake.

One of our counselors ended up getting mild hypothermia, it was very scary but luckily he made a speedy recovery. The next day day we hiked back through the torrential rain to the first campsite. The following day we hiked all the way out to the trailhead. The next couple of days we did one very steep, yet beautiful hike and one hike through beautiful flowers. Then we drove to a new campsite in the cozy seaside town of Seward.

Then our final portion of the trip was upon us, Kayaking! We took a ferry to rocky beach, set up camp. Then we got debriefed on kayaking knowledge and finally we headed out kayaking. The scenery was amazing and the water was crystal calm. Right before me was a massive glacier, standing up to 2000 feet tall, the sheer size was breathtaking. We also saw a harbor seal and bald eagles.

After a good nights sleep we headed out once again and were in awe of what we saw. Hundreds of waterfalls and stunning wildlife including jelly fish, seals, fish and bald eagles!

Before I knew it we headed back on the ferry, when suddenly the boat stopped, and right next to us were orcas! It was an incredible sight, I couldn't believe how lucky we were.

The next day I headed back on an airplane where I had time to reflect and realize what a truly amazing adventure I had just had in Alaska.
